When you are outdoors, take a look around. Whether you are in a suburb, or the country or in the city, you’ll surely see something appealing. On my walk in my neighborhood, I saw this simple scene with a house and a tree that stood out to me in the afternoon light. Start by making a light sketch of the scene using Grip 2001 Graphite Pencil – HB on mixed media paper.
Fill out the sky space with blue and grey. I like the textured look, so I let my pencil strokes show.
I used the Goldfaber Color Pencils #147 and #273 for the sky as the background.
Color the house next.
I started with grey #273 and added depth with blues #140 and #151 and added details with black #199. For the roof and chimney, I used #283 and #192.
Add colors to the background foliage and also the foreground. Again, let the visual texture from the pencil strokes stand out rather than smoothing and blending the colors together. I used the following yellows and greens#108, 183, 170, 173 and 158.
Color the trunk and draw the branches with black #199. Because most of the leaves had fallen off, many of the branches are visible. But this step is optional.
Fill in the leaves with the same yellows and greens as above to finish.
I hope you enjoyed today’s tutorial with Goldfaber Color Pencils. Be sure to notice things to sketch when you are out and about.
