Raphael has more than 229 years of brush-making behind them, with more than 160 years under the Sauer Family. This makes them the longest-running European manufacturer of brushes for artists.

Innovation

Raphael now has state-of-the-art manufacturing in both France and Mauritius. They have the capability to develop and manufacture their own fibers and work with their chemists, brush manufacturers, and artists to develop brushes specific to the demands of artists.

Why is this important?

With the history and experience Raphael has at their disposal, as well as the technology of their facilities, Raphael has developed a brush we thought may not be possible. The new Raphael Innovative Synthetic Kolinsky is an imitation Kolinsky that boasts the ability to not only mimic a natural Kolinsky brush, but often performs at a higher level in our tests. With no harm done to the Siberian Kolinsky population, these new brushes are completely vegan-friendly, from the fiber to the handles, glues, and lacquers. Handmade in Mauritius, the utmost care and attention are put into every Innovative Synthetic Kolinsky brush.

This brush takes its shape and balance ques from the esteemed Raphael 8404 Kolinsky. For as long as I recall, the Raphael 8404 Kolinsky had been the gold standard of a Kolinsky brush, and now it has a synthetic alternative. Raphael chose an elegant design that mixes glossy and matte black, with a glossy black coated solid brass ferrule and a matte black wood handle.

Of course, the main feature of the design is the proprietary blend of premium wavy and straight synthetic fibers. On the black handle, these fibers stand out beautifully.
