This Month We Highlight our Grounds & Surfaces Videos!
QoR Watercolor Ground
A fluid acrylic primer that creates a porous surface similar to hot press paper on many different materials, including canvas and panel. Watercolor Ground dries to an absorbent, lightfast and flexible surface that withstands repeated lifting and scrubbing. Suitable for a full range of watercolor techniques, including wash and staining effects, it can be used to return stained areas to an absorbent white surface.

QoR Cold Press Ground
Cold Press Ground creates an absorbent, cool white surface with the appearance of rough handmade paper. A smoother finish can also be achieved by skimming with a wet palette knife during application. Ideal when a rough texture is desired for emphasizing dry brush techniques.

QoR Light Dimensional Ground
A white, lightweight paste that spreads like frosting, Light Dimensional Ground can be applied smooth and thinly, or built up to create ridges, peaks and other interesting textures. The extremely absorbent surface of Light Dimensional Ground allows washes to spread quickly, while accommodating fine lines and detail as well. Dropping color into lightly wet areas creates beautiful blooms.

How to Apply Titanium Oil Ground
This is Williamsburg Oil Colors’ recommendation for preparing canvas using Titanium Oil Ground – which is made with Titanium Dioxide and marble dust to produce an ideal combination of tooth and absorbency for oil painting.

This Month We Highlight our JustPaint.org Articles on Grounds & Surfaces!
Uncommon Grounds Acrylic Dispersion Grounds: a.k.a. Gesso
This article is an attempt to establish a common language and an understanding of acrylic dispersion grounds, the attributes of the grounds and how those attributes function within the painting. This article will conclude with a very needed but mostly ignored effort to understand the development and necessity for a quality standard for grounds.

Textured Acrylic Grounds for Oil Painting
Starting a painting with a dynamic texture can be a way to discover new possibilities and unexpected results. This article looks at five GOLDEN Acrylic products that can be used to prepare a textured surface for oils: GOLDEN Extra Coarse Pumice Gel, Coarse Pumice Gel, Fiber Paste, Coarse Molding Paste and Pastel Ground.

Painting with Oils on Non-Porous Substrates
With the rising popularity of alternative painting supports such as Dibond®, aluminum panels, acrylic sheeting and polyester films, we wanted to create some initial testing focused on how well oil paints adhere to these and other non-porous substrates without any ground preparation. We looked at several types of substrates, scuffed and unscuffed, with a couple different oil paint applications. After applying the materials and waiting from one to six months, we performed cross-hatch adhesion tests and scratched at the surface, which led to some interesting results.

Painting with Oils on Paper
For oil painters who find themselves eager to paint but reluctant to spend too much time or money on surface preparation, you might try working on paper. Paper can be reasonably priced, easy to prepare and less formal than panel or stretched canvas. If prepared properly and maintained with longevity in mind, paper can be a permanent substrate for sketches, studies, and finished oil paintings.

Differentiating Between Acrylic Gesso and Williamsburg Oil Ground
Grounds are selected to provide the proper color, level of absorbency and tooth to meet an artist’s needs. Oil painters have the extra concern of protecting from oil penetration into the substrate, which can mean more coats, and often additional time spent in preparation. This article looks at a couple of our popular grounds for oil painters and points out some of the basic characteristics and differences between GOLDEN Acrylic Gesso, Williamsburg Titanium Oil Ground and Williamsburg Lead Oil Ground.

QoR Mediums and Grounds
QoR watercolor gives us the opportunity to broaden the range of techniques and applications possible with a companion line of Mediums and Grounds. QoR Grounds greatly expand the breadth of surfaces that can accept watercolor paint and provide the freedom to create original surfaces by controlling absorbency and forming textures when used alone or mixed together. The Mediums help facilitate and control application, color saturation, opacity, sheen, lift and wetting. This collection is comprised of tools to hopefully excite the traditional watercolorist and entice the experimental and mixed media artist to explore and discover new possibilities.
