Created as a foundational palette for urban sketching, this combination of granulating and non-granulating colors allows for a wide variety of mixtures, clean bright colors, chromatic neutrals, and textural effects. The inclusion of six empty half-pans expands the potential even further by allowing artists space to customize the palette.

Displaying Watercolor Paintings without Glass
In this demonstration, you’ll see how watercolor paintings on paper can be prepared for exhibition by varnishing instead of the traditional encasement behind glass with mats and framing. Coating your work with varnish provides a protective barrier from damaging moisture and sunlight, and with the addition of an optional isolation coat, the varnish can be removed for cleaning or to change the sheen.

QoR Watercolor Ground
A fluid acrylic primer that creates a porous surface similar to hot press paper on many different materials, including canvas and panel, Watercolor Ground dries to an absorbent, lightfast and flexible surface that withstands repeated lifting and scrubbing. Suitable for a full range of watercolor techniques, including wash and staining effects, it can be used to return stained areas to an absorbent white surface.

QoR Cold Press Ground
Cold Press Ground creates an absorbent, cool white surface with the appearance of rough handmade paper. A smoother finish can also be achieved by skimming with a wet palette knife during application. Ideal when a rough texture is desired for emphasizing dry brush techniques.

QoR Light Dimensional Ground
A white, lightweight paste that spreads like frosting, Light Dimensional Ground can be applied smooth and thinly, or built up to create ridges, peaks and other interesting textures. The extremely absorbent surface of Light Dimensional Ground allows washes to spread quickly, while accommodating fine lines and detail as well. Dropping color into lightly wet areas creates beautiful blooms.

Shiny! QoR Iridescent and Interference Watercolors
From its introduction, QoR offered three shimmery shiny special effect colors in tube format: Iridescent Pearl, Iridescent Silver, and Iridescent Gold. The summer of 2022, QoR added three Interference paints available in the “Reflective” six pan set: Interference Violet, Interference Blue, and Interference Green. The original three Iridescent watercolors are also part of this half pan set. This article will focus on these shiny paints, and show some of the aesthetic possibilities they offer.

Using QoR Watercolor Medium, Synthetic Ox Gall, and Lift Aid
QoR Watercolor Medium may be used to increase the strength, body, and gloss of watercolor paint. The additive Synthetic Ox Gall is a wetting agent that changes how diluted watercolor moves over or absorbs into the surface. Lift Aid is a transparent aid which, if applied and allowed to dry before being covered with watercolor, facilitates lifting of even staining colors. In a retail store, all three will be placed with “watercolor mediums.” These products can assist in techniques and might provoke new avenues of exploration.

Using QoR Masking Fluid with Watercolor
QoR Masking Fluid is a ready-to-use, removable liquid made with natural latex which may be applied to watercolor paper or watercolor ground before painting. Once dry, the Masking Fluid will resist paint, allowing watercolor artists to preserve fine details and lines of white paper that might be difficult to paint around in traditional transparent watercolor applications. It also can facilitate faster creation of overall textures and layers of abstract marks. QoR Masking Fluid works beautifully on all of the QoR Grounds.

QoR Mediums and Grounds
QoR Grounds greatly expand the breadth of surfaces that can accept watercolor paint and provide the freedom to create original surfaces by controlling absorbency and forming textures when used alone or mixed together. The Mediums help facilitate and control application, color saturation, opacity, sheen, lift and wetting. This collection is comprised of tools to hopefully excite the traditional watercolorist and entice the experimental and mixed media artist to explore and discover new possibilities.
