At Tombow, we’re all about celebrations! Find out how to create a DIY rainbow cake topper with this quick and easy tutorial.
Materials
- Tombow MONO Aqua Liquid Glue
- Rainbow sequins
- MDF (medium density fiberboard) letter or number
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Dowel rods
- Acrylic paint
- Paintbrush
Step 1: Paint
First, you will need to paint your letter or number. Paint the front and back white and the edges metallic gold for a little extra shimmer.
Step 2: Measure
Next, it’s time to measure. Divide your cake topper into even sections and make pencil marks accordingly. Make sure you mark one section for each color of sequins.
Step 3: Glue Sequins
It’s time to glue the sequins. Use the broad tip side of the MONO Aqua Liquid Glue to apply the sequins in one color section at a time. It’s best to start at the bottom of your cake topper. This helps keep the colors contained in their sections, plus it produces a fun layering effect at the end of the project. Once you’ve glued all of the colors in a beautiful rainbow, adjust any sequins that need to be repositioned. Use the pen tip of the MONO Aqua Liquid Glue to fill in any blank spots. Let your cake topper dry and repeat on the back.
Step 4: Glue Dowel Rods
Now, it’s time to attach the dowel rods to the cake topper. After making sure your dowel rods are cut to the appropriate height, use the pen tip of the MONO Aqua Liquid Glue to place the dowel rods on the bottom of the cake topper. Let the glue dry, so the dowel rods form a permanent bond to the cake topper. If you really want to make sure everything is solid, you can add another layer of MONO Aqua Liquid Glue around the cake topper and dowel rod connection.
Step 5: Add Cake
All that is left to do is add your cake topper to your cake!
